Introduction to Graeco-Egyptian Magick

Egypt during the Graeco-Roman period was a melting pot of numerous spiritual and philosophical movements drawn from the length and breadth of the Hellenic Empire. Graeco-Egyptian magick was the last flowering of pagan magick in Egypt and consisted of a blending of a number of ancient magickal streams. This system of magick has a number of unique features very different to those of contemporary systems.

If time and circumstances permit, (see note) it is possible to include an angelic invocation so as to provide a practical illustration of the basic principles of Graeco-Egyptian magick.

Magickal Initiation in Egypt

Initiation and training for magickians in Egypt during the Graeco-Roman period was taken very seriously. It would entail long apprenticeships, some of which was spent in underground chambers. People in ancient times saw a close relationship between magick and the mystery cults. Magick was a gift of the gods, and was in some cases facilitated through the action of an assistant or guardian spirit.

If time and circumstances permit, (see note) it is possible to include an invocation to Khepri, the scarab god, so as to illustrate a technique used to access your guardian spirit.

Ancient Curses and Binding Spells

A brief overview of curses and binding spells used in the Mediterranean area during the Graeco-Roman period, focusing on Egypt.

If time and circumstances permit, (see note) it is possible to include an invocation to Osiris, so as to illustrate a technique used as part of a binding spell.

Commerce Magick

A brief overview of techniques used by shopkeepers in the ancient world so as to maximise their profits. These techniques are readily applicable to optimising contemporary businesses.

If time and circumstances permit, (see note) it is possible to include an invocation to Hermes, so as to illustrate a technique used to bring customers into a shop.

Necromancy in the Ancient World

Necromancy is the act of conjuring the dead for purpose of divination. Widely practiced throughout the ancient world, it includes the evocation of ghosts, oracles of the dead, and reanimation. Necromancy involves dissolving the barriers between the living and the spirits of the dead, so that the spirits, no longer fettered by physical bodies, can divulge information not normally available to the living.

If time and circumstances permit, (see note) an invocation to the Daimon of the Dead, will be included so as to illustrate a technique used for working with the spirits of the dead. [Note that daimon means spirit.]

Selene, The Moon Goddess

The lunar cycles are linked with the tides and menstruation, and have been traditionally used by farmers to optimize agriculture. The full moon has been linked with behavioral changes. An effective way of experiencing lunar energies is through the moon goddess, Selene. Selene's golden crown was said to illuminate the night sky. Every night, Selene journeyed across the heavens, clad in splendid robes, riding in a chariot drawn by two white horses, mules, or cows. Sometimes she was portrayed as mounted on a horse, mule, or bull. The horns of the bull and cows symbolized the crescent moon.

If time and circumstances permit, (see note) it is possible to include an angelic invocation so as to provide a practical illustration of the basic principles of Graeco-Egyptian magick.

If time and circumstances permit, (see note) it is possible to include an invocation of Selene using Graeco-Egyptian Magick.

Aphroditê, the Goddess of Love

Aphrodite was originally a fertility goddess whose domain encompassed all of nature. As time went on, her role of a goddess of love overshadowed her role as a fertility deity. She presided over marriage and prostitution, but had numerous other roles including warfare and bestowing victory. Aphrodite had a wrathful side to her nature where she punished people who failed to give her due worship or failed to honor pledges. In earlier art she was clothed, while later she was portrayed unclothed and rising out of water.

If time and circumstances permit, (see note) an invocation of Aphroditê using Graeco-Egyptian Magick. will be included.

The Practice of Ancient Greek Religion Today

Religion was so seamlessly integrated into the fabric of ancient Greek society that there was no actual word for it. Ancient Greece was divided into a number of city states, each of which was independent and differed from the others in many respects, including religious beliefs and practices. Additionally, public worship differed from domestic worship, and practices differed over time.

This workshop will give a brief overview of what is known about ancient Greek religion, why it still fascinates so many, and how it can be made relevant today.

If time and circumstances permit, (see note) a prayer to Athena, using Greek traditions will be included.
